Full
Measure Productions, formerly The Full
Measure, was begun by Doug Krause in
1996. Initially it was a full service
music production and transcription
business that has now become primarily
a record label. After many years as a
composer, songwriter, producer, and
performer in the Denver area, Doug
realized the need for professional
transcription and music engraving
services and started the business as a
sideline. It quickly became an outlet
for other professional activities
including music production. In 2003,
the name was changed to more
appropriately reflect the primary
activities.
It was
also in 2003 that Doug Krause formed
Denver Basin Music, a publishing
company. Having been an affiliated
writer with Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI)
since the late '70's, Doug felt it was
time to put his experience and
knowledge to work in publishing. "Of
course, the first reason for forming
the company is to promote my music,"
Doug explains, "but we are also
interested in trying to promote new
writers from the Rocky Mountain
region." Denver Basin Music and Full
Measure Productions are currently
working with the female artist/writer
Salem, who is featured on the Baby's
Breath Project Soundtrack, and
the Dirty Shoes Band which is a
collection of seasoned performing
veterans with a hard-edged retro
sound.
As the
company grows, the expectation is to
focus on independent music which can
be defined as non-mainstream.
"I tried the mainstream thing in the
early '80's when I dragged my wife and
baby to Los Angeles," Doug says when
explaining the Denver Basin Music
philosophy." I made some contacts, a
couple of records, did some
performing, studio work, and writing,
but what you're expected to do to
'make it' in the business compromised
my integrity. Besides, the lifestyle
was not conducive to raising a family
which was always the most important
thing us." In Denver, Doug found a
perfect place to have a career and a
family
and to establish his family-oriented
companies. "I want to build
Denver Basin Music into a voice for
the wonderful writers and artists in
this region who are overlooked because
they don't live in a major music
center. I think we make excellent
music,
and if we can reach the listeners, I
think they'll agree."
"The "Baby's
Breath Project Soundtrack" is by
far the most involved thing I have
done compositionally," says Doug, "at
least since I was writing string
quartets and choir pieces in graduate
school. I loved the opportunity to
create so many different styles in one
project, everything from pop songs to
orchestral works. I am very proud of
what was achieved in this recording
and look forward to sharing it with
others."
